Calling 9-1-1 for an Emergency
|

Emsworth VFC, along with mostly all other fire departments, police agencies and
EMS services in Allegheny County are dispatched by Allegheny County 9-1-1 in the
Point Breeze section of the City of Pittsburgh. Calls come into the 9-1-1 center via
either a home phone or a cell phone. The first question the calltaker will ask when
you call 9-1-1 is "What City, Township or Borough?". This is a vital element in
getting a correct address, as there are many streets within the county with the same
name and numeric ranges.
A landline 9-1-1 call will automatically give the address and callback number of the
residence. This information MAY OR MAY NOT be correct, depending on how
updated the phone company is with their records. The calltaker will ask you to
verify your information to ensure you are sent the proper help to the correct
location.
A cellular 9-1-1 call is more difficult to process. There is no location identifier to
show the calltaker where you are calling from. It is a good idea to know where you
are BEFORE calling. Look for a close address, business or intersecting streets
prior to calling, and relay that information to the calltaker who is handling your call.
Remember, please don't get frustrated when the calltaker keeps asking you
questions about what is going on... they are just doing their job, which is collecting
enough information to ensure the timliness and safety of responding units to the
emergency. The person who is handling your call, mor times than not, have already
sent your information to the appropriate dispatcher(s) while you ar still on the
phone. If you think that the response is being delayed because of questioning, IT IS
NOT... they are just getting you the best help needed for the specific situation.
